Blue Key Honor Society was founded at the University of Toledo in 1935 as ARX. The purpose of ARX was to recognize individuals who excelled in campus leadership, scholarship, and the promotion of the University of Toledo. In 1952 ARX was accepted as a chapter of Blue Key National Honor Fraternity. Today Blue Key continues with many of the traditions and rituals of the founding organization.

The members of Blue Key are responsible for annual events including the Homecoming Parade in the fall and Songfest in the spring. In addition to these responsibilities, membership involves a strong sense of brotherhood among both the active and alumni brothers.

The active membership of Blue Key is held to 13 outstanding upper-class students. New members are selected by the current active class. The criteria for selection include academic achievement, outstanding community and university service and, most importantly, leadership experience and quality
